Photoshop tips thread
Posted 02 August 2009 - 05:52 AM
NOW, this is only for requesting/giving tips and tutorials (only request, as tutorials take big place and need a new thread for that).
This is how it works:
Request; You don't demand, you make a nice request and tell us what you would like to learn, or give us an example of a pic and tell us if there is an effect in it you would like to learn.
Tips: You reply here, if me and mr-mushy approve it, i will put a link to your reply below here under 'Tips:'
Tutorial: Almost the same as tips, just that they normally is so big that they fit better in an own topic. If me and mr-mushy approve it, it will be linked below under 'Tutorials:'
Any questions, about what I've written above, PM me, questions about the tutorials, ask in their thread.

I know this is a tutorial, but it's a really small one.
OK first, here we got a bad example on a text:
Now, what we are gonna do to make the text look better is:
Take a pic, something with not much variation in how light it is, and put it in a layer below the text, select the text layer and use the magic tool outside the text, and then right click and select similar, so that you have selected all the area the text isn't in:
(Might need to look close, but i actually did put another pic behind the text except for just the background, in this case, just the same layer duplicated, but modes so another area was shown.)
Then you select the layer below and push the del/delete button on your keyboard:
Set a 1 pixel black(fits normally best) stroke around the text layer:
And then you just select a blend mode which gives a nice texture in the text:

Your basic tools will include the following:
The Lasso groups (Polygon lasso is the most used of these, the others make mistakes easy).
Marquee Group is useful for getting rid of certain areas of unwanted graphic.
Find yourself a nice render, in this case it's not so nice but it proves useful for this activity.
Select your polygonal lasso and carefully select around the path of your object, this is a rather straight image, some renders have many curves. Don't be afraid to make lots of anchors.
Once you have selected what you want, carefully select away from the image and complete the loop so the area you want to delete/crop/cut/whatever becomes selectable.
You will end up with lots of jagged bits, an eraser set to opacity or a very weak blur brush can get rid of those. If your careful with the cropping, you shouldn't have to many problems.

Can you please tell me how you got it to just show the outline of the text so you can see the background through the word?
It would be really appreciated, thanks!
