That's hardly the point I was trying to make with that con, though re-reading it certainly made it sound that way (my apologies.. I'll edit it). I hate the skill system because it isn't a build. You don't buy or improve your skills except for the shitty rune system (which isn't improving them.. it's changing them into something totally different). You don't invest anything and there will never, EVER be a reason to have two characters of the same class since you can so easily respec everything (since it isn't even a fucking respec, but just dragging different skills and swapping out your gear).
Everyone will always have ALL the skills... which is just retarded to me. You should have to choose carefully, otherwise what is the point of a build? With this mode you don't have to plan or think.. you just drag whatever you want and use it. You'll never be able to "pump" certain skills to turn them into a great primary attack, and will instead rely on the terrible base+rune crap, which means everyone will always have the same level of skills.
With the removal of skill points you also lose the ability to have +skills on items, which makes it further impossible to improve specific spells beyond their base ability.
Also, if there is an "elective mode" it was not made obvious. I'd test (since I don't know if I believe it), but as I said I uninstalled the beta. If you have any official info you can quote on it and how it works that'd be awesome to have. Everyone I watched play did it how I did as well since the system is made to seem like you HAVE to select one from each area instead of picking whatever you want. If they DO have that mode, they made a huge design mistake with not making it glaringly obvious right off the bat and are therefore clearly catering to idiots and console gamers that are too used to dumbed down games.

Check out the skill calculator on the official website, it works like that on elective mode. It's on the settings, and I had to look for it since I saw a video of a crazy Monk build with three Spirit generators.

Danke! That certainly makes the game at least a tad more tolerable. I think it's hugely stupid on their part to basically "hide" that functionality though.

I though exactly the same, after finding that out I imagined a whole new lot of possibilities and made the game waaaayy more interesting for me, and it surely would have caused a lot of the fan outrage to be less excessive.
But, it looks like they really are catering for an incredibly more casual audience, so, yeah.

Which is SUCH a mistake.. they don't seem to realize the value of the D2 junkies out there. The fact that shitloads of people still play on bnet should have told them that "herp derp we should probably pay at least a BIT of lip service to them". The only thing they've really done for the fans is the music........... which I mute mostly since D2 is a game that was great with my own music blaring.
