Because you want to reach as many people as possible.
Even though I would think it's stupid to use any of the above mentioned, I could see why some desperate server owners would use it.

Well, some of the top servers have twitter and facebook, so I wouldn't say 'desperate'

Best Reason: server is down / offline posts when the website may not be up? Tweeting members about updates so they don't have to worry bout looking? its very useful actually :)
